Speed Panel to Decide 2010 Mario Andretti Trophy Winner

November 26, 2010

As the Monster Jam Truck schedule gears up for the beginning of 2011, the annual awards are here again for the very best racers. Mario Andretti himself will be sitting on the SPEED.com panel that chooses the 2010 SPEED Performer of the Year, along with distinguished broadcasters Bob Varsha and Ralph Sheheen, plus host of “Wind Tunnel” Dave Despain, SPEED.com editor-in-chief Tom Jensen and others. This will be the 5th annual award for Performer of the Year, and the recipient will be awarded a handsome brnoze trophy fashioned by bronze worker Elie Hazak.

Main man Mario remarked, “This is the only award that considers all the major disciplines of motor sports. Because of that it’s a daunting job for the individuals tasked with selecting a winner. Because all the different series are included, you’ve got a bigger and deeper pool of talent from which to select a performer of the year. What I also like is that the criteria for this award are not just about winning championships. The ultimate performer of the year doesn’t have to be the series champion — he just needs to have driven with gusto.”

Last year’s winner was Tony Schumacher, but for the three years prior to that perennial NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson collected the huge trophy, that weighs in at 100 lbs.! The indefatigable Johnson was also runner-up last season. Among the categories are Best Move, Temper Temper, Best Rivalry, Biggest Hit, Best Finish, Best Comeback and Biggest Upset. Well over 100,000 votes are expected to be cast. Buy Monster Jam tickets and other racing tickets now and be part of the action!

The recent Arizona State Fair saw some awesome Monster Jam Truck action, when Phoenix hosted the Monster Truck Freestyle Spectacular! This all-action show had some of the major players that people are buying Monster Jam Trucks for at the moment, such as Rick Swanson driving Obsessed, Jeff Jones riding the similarly-named Obsession, Rod Wood in El Perro Loc and Tony Canedo in Play’n 4 Keeps. Monster Truck tickets are always selling well these days and it’s no surprise with freestyle contests like this. The Phoenix Monster Jam freestyle contest was a one round, winner-or-lose format, and Tony Canedo took the prize. We saw some rollover action as well as great jumps and other moves. Stay tuned for the 2011 Monster Jam Truck schedule, because the hard-drivin’ action hasn’t even begun!
